After some thorough kissing, they made themselves decent and went to the kitchen. Ian took a seat at the table, and Jacob made him a sandwich.
"You're not having anything?"
"Not hungry," Jacob said as he set the plate with Ian's sandwich in front of him. He then took a seat across from him at the kitchen table.
"You can't let stress get to you. You have to eat," Ian lectured him. Getting up, he grabbed a knife. He cut his sandwich and gave half of it to Jacob.
Jacob bit into it grudgingly. "I need to eat. I need to sleep, but I can't do much of either."
"You can't sleep?"
"I was never a good sleeper."
"I thought I did a good job back there," Ian said pointing back toward the living room. "But you only look a little more relaxed. Should I have another go at you?"
"Feel free, but I'll be tense again in seconds. How can this be happening? A dead woman is haunting my son. This shouldn't be real."
"You want me to explain ghosts?" Ian asked, not that he could.
"You could tell me that this all makes sense somehow."
"It doesn't. This is crazy, but it's happening," Ian told him bluntly.
"I just want it to stop. I want my boy to be safe."
"She hasn't done anything to hurt him or even frighten him," Ian reminded him. Instead of sensing an ominous, bone chilling presence, Toby saw something luminous and friendly that tugged at his heart. "Since you're a hopeless case, I'm going to go, look in on my dad," Ian said as he got up.
When he was a few steps from the front door, Ian turned around.
"I'm going to leave through the back," he told Jacob. "I want to see if your ghost has anything to say to me."
"And I thought you were here for me. Should I be jealous?" Jacob asked.
"I don't mind if you get jealous, but not of a ghost. I want you to get crazy jealous of an awesome, hunky guy who has the hots for me."
"Is there a guy?" Jacob asked, his expression turning dark.
"Just you," Ian said and grinned. He hoped Jacob got his message. He wasn't sure though. Jacob frowned at his words.
"What's the problem?" Ian asked him. "I'm ready to get serious. Why do I get the impression that you don't like the idea?" He had noticed that look in Jacob's eyes before, but he didn't want to push him. Right now, he was in the mood to push both the ghost and Jacob.
"Do you even know what you're taking on?" Jacob asked him.
"The best kid in the world. And you too," Ian told him. He was nervous as soon as he said the words. What if Jacob shut him down?
Jacob looked taken aback. "I don't think you know what you're saying," he said sounding more than a little scared.
"What has you so worried about me?" Ian asked, not that he wanted to hear it.
"No matter how much I want you, when I look at you, I see a young guy who isn't ready for my kind of total commitment," Jacob stated.
